Before the Pyramids emerged from the sand or Stonehenge stood tall, this place was home to a sophisticated wealthy society intent on leaving their mark on Ireland’s landscape – and oh, what a mark they made. These talented astronomers, geologists, engineers and builders organised large numbers of people to build huge monuments, leaving an enduring legacy that still astonishes.

Sitting within the inland island known as the Bend of the Boyne, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Brú na Bóinne safeguards the largest collection of megalithic art in Europe, dotted across over 90 Neolithic monuments. Best known of these are the vale’s three most spectacular sites: Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. Each holds its own unique story – but it’s the confluence of all three in the heart of Ireland’s richest archaeological landscape that makes a trip here simply unparalleled.

Access to Newgrange and Knowth is through the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre only. Here you’ll find a state-of-the-art interpretive centre where you can learn more about Neolithic life and enjoy guided tours of these extraordinary monuments. Online booking is recommended.

Trim Castle, located on the south bank of the River Boyne in County Meath, stands as the largest and most impressive Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland. Its construction began around 1172 under Hugh de Lacy and continued for over 30 years, eventually serving as the powerful administrative capital for the Lordship of Meath. The site's strategic elevated position was chosen to overlook a critical fording point on the river, symbolizing Norman dominance over the surrounding landscape.

The fortress is best known for its unique 20-sided cruciform keep, a three-storey masterpiece of 12th-century experimental military architecture with walls up to three metres thick. Surrounding this central tower is an expansive three-acre enclosure protected by massive curtain walls and a series of defensive towers and gatehouses. Despite periods of decline starting in the 16th century, much of its original medieval fabric remains remarkably intact, as the castle was never modernised into a residential home in later centuries.

In modern times, Trim Castle achieved global fame as a primary filming location for the 1995 Academy Award-winning epic Braveheart, where its imposing walls stood in for the city of York and the Tower of London.
